Hello everyone I want to talk to you today about redemption. Have you ever thought about what it means to be redeemed? I mean really thought about the sacrifice that was made for us to be able to go to heaven? Well that is what God put on my heart this morning. Now I’m not one for doing a whole lot of research I feel that if I am in the right place God let’s me know just like he did this morning. I googled the word redemption and I came across an article from Thoughtco.com and this is what the article said,
“Redemption (pronounced ree DEMP shun) is the act of buying something back or paying a price or ransom to return something to your possession.
Redemption is the English translation of the Greek word agorazo, meaning “to purchase in the marketplace.” In ancient times, it often referred to the act of buying a slave. It carried the meaning of freeing someone from chains, prison, or slavery.
The New Bible Dictionary gives this definition: “Redemption means deliverance from some evil by payment of a price.”
What Does Redemption Mean to Christians?
The Christian use of redemption means Jesus Christ, through his sacrificial death, purchased believers from the slavery of sin to set us free from that bondage.
Another Greek word relating to this term is exagorazo. Redemption always involves going from something to something else. In this case, it is Christ freeing us from the bondage of the law to freedom of a new life in him.
The third Greek word connected with redemption is lutroo, meaning “to obtain release by the payment of a price.” The price (or ransom), in Christianity, was Christ’s precious blood, obtaining our release from sin and death.”
Now this really sums it up for me because that is exactly what Jesus Christ did for me! Not only for me but for anyone who “believes in Jesus Christ” can be redeemed. Now I don’t know about you but when I think about what Jesus did for me and the sacrifice He made for us I get very emotional. I think about God who made a decision to send His Son to earth as a sacrifice for many, a life changing decision for many people including me. Jesus Christ obeyed His Father knowing the out come would mean a terrible death on a cross. The torture He endured before He was ever put on the cross was unimaginable. He was betrayed by His disciple Judas Iscariot for 30 pieces of silver, He was abandoned by His disciples after He was taken, He was falsely accused and rejected by Jewish leaders God’s chosen people, He was mocked and abused by Roman guards, He knew he would carried the burden of the sins of the world and asked His Father to let that cup pass if it was God’s will, not His own. He obeyed His Father knowing what was coming. Jesus was spat on, His cloths were torn, He was beaten, and mocked a crown of thorns placed upon His head. Jesus had to carry His own cross to the place were He would be crucified. How horrible it must have been for Him know that once He got to Golgotha He would be nailed through His hands and feet to that cross for the sins of the world. All the while still being mocked by those that were there including the two thieves who were being crucified with Him. Given sour wine mingled with gall to drink still being mocked in disgust by those that were there. Only to cry out to His Father, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me”. But you see God did not forsake His only begotten Son, God had to turn His face away from the sin that Jesus bore. In that moment I can only imagine how much pain God must have felt having to turn away from His Son Jesus who was baring the sins of the world all so we had a way to heaven.
As a mother I can’t fathom ever allowing one of my children to be sacrificed for anyone let alone the entire world and I am sure there is no parent out there that could do that. Yet God loved us so much, with all our flaws, that He made that sacrifice so we could be redeemed and spend eternity with Him and His Son. So the next time you are having a bad day remember what The Father and The Son did to Redeem us and thank them for loving you that much. God Bless and have a redeemed day.
I would like to share a comment from John Bowen Sr. that I think is very important because he is right about what he said and I’m glad Mr. Bowen pointed it out.
